Star Wars & Skellig Michael

Skellig Michael is sheer pinnacle of crumpled sandstone and slate rising out of the Atlantic about 12 km off the west coast of Ireland.
I visited there in 1972, and again in August, 2014, just days before the filming of the final scene of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Around the sixth century AD a group of monks founded a monastery on the sheer north peak of Skellig Michael. Over hundreds of years, they carved steps and constructed flat, wide platforms out of solid rock, built drystone oratories and beehive huts, rainwater cisterns, latrines, a church, and a cemetery; cultivated gardens and public spaces.

They lived continuously on the rocky island until sometime in the thirteenth century. The abandoned monastery continues to be revered as a place of pilgrimage. The steps and drystone structures remain to this day, as witnessed in the film.
